Hij nam in 1964 deel aan het\u00a0San Remo Festival\u00a0met\u00a0<i>Una lacrima sul viso<\/i>, doordat hij laryngitis had kon hij niet live zingen waardoor hij gediskwalificeerd werd. Het lied werd een immens succes en was het eerste lied dat een miljoen keer over de toonbank ging in Itali\u00eb, wereldwijd werden 3 miljoen platen verkocht. Hij won datzelfde jaar nog het\u00a0Festivalbar\u00a0met\u00a0<i>Credi a me<\/i>. In\u00a01965\u00a0won hij wel het San Remo Festival met\u00a0<i>Se piangi se ridi<\/i>\u00a0en mocht hij ook naar het\u00a0Eurovisiesongfestival\u00a0waar hij als 5e eindigde. Ook in\u00a01969\u00a0won hij San Remo met\u00a0<i>Zingara<\/i>, dit keer zat er echter geen eurovisieticket aan vast.
